This position is located in the Audiology and Speech Pathology Service at the Adam Benjamin Jr Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) located in Crown Point, IN which is a part of the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, Chicago, IL. Basic Requirements: The following are the basic requirements and qualifications for appointment as an Audiologist. English Language Proficiency Requirement - Per VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, Paragraph 3j: No person will be appointed under authority of 38 U.S.C., chapter 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity in VHA who is not proficient in written and spoken English. Education Requirement - You must possess a master's degree or its equivalent in audiology or hearing science from an accredited college or university is required. Accredited means a college or university accredited by a regional accreditation origination and an audiology program recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education (ACAE) and/or Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Transcripts Required Licensure: For those grades that require licensure (GS-12 grade level and above), candidates must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice audiology in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Copy of Licensure Required May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Graduate Audiologists: Non-licensed audiologists who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for licensure may be given a temporary appointment (not to exceed 13 months) as a graduate audiologist under the authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405(c). Failure to obtain licensure during appointment as a graduate audiologist is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. Individuals appointed as graduate audiologists may not be promoted to the GS-12 level without being fully licensed. This may result in termination of employment. Grade Determination: In addition to the basic requirement above, the following criteria must be met when determining grades. GS-9 Grade Level: Education and Licensure: None beyond the basic requirements above. GS-11 Grade Level - Education and Experience: Completion of 1 year of professional experience as an audiologist equivalent to the GS-9 grade level -OR-3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to doctoral degree; or doctoral degree in audiology, hearing science, or a directly related field (transcripts required). In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs. Knowledge of contemporary audiology practice. Ability to communicate orally and in writing. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, acoustics, applied acoustics, communication, psychoacoustics, and auditory/vestibular pathophysiology Knowledge of principles and techniques in the assessment and treatment of auditory nd balance disorders. Ability to interact with patients, families, and other health care professionals. GS-12 Grade Level - Education and Experience: In addition to the requirements at the GS-11 grade level, completion of 1 year of professional experience comparable to the GS-11 grade level and possession of a full, current and unrestricted license to practice audiology. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs. Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies. Knowledge of clinical services, and the ability to perform them independently. Ability to conduct assessments and provide treatment interventions. Ability to provide consultation to other health care professionals. Knowledge of contemporary audiology practice. Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary audiology scope of practice. Grade Determination: The full performance level of this vacancy is a GS-012. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-09 to GS-12. Physical Requirements: Position is mostly sedentary in nature and may require some light lifting and moving. ["Clinical duties and responsibilities include direct patient care involving a full range of audiology and balance evaluation and treatment services, including the selection and fitting of hearing aids and other amplification systems and devices, aural (auditory) rehabilitation, and counseling of hearing-impaired veterans and their family. The incumbent identifies and evaluates individuals with hearing disorders in the reception and perception of speech, language and other acoustic signals to a full range of patient complexity. Incumbent plans, conducts, and coordinates auditory (aural) rehabilitation, tinnitus, and/or vestibular rehabilitation programs for patients; designs patient-centered treatment plans to assist patient and caregivers to maximize and restore to the greatest extent possible physical and social functioning; and designs, monitors, and conducts a comprehensive hearing conservation program for employees at risk for noise exposure. Incumbent serves as a consultant to other facility personnel involving the most difficult and complex cases and is a recognized subject matter expert on matters related to hearing, tinnitus, and balance disorders. The incumbent will be responsible for supervising, evaluating, mentoring, and precepting student trainees in audiology and maintaining a liaison with affiliated colleges and universities. He may also provide instruction to residents and interns who seek information relation to audiology. Communication is required by this position and the incumbent will be expected to attend regular staff meetings and inter-disciplinary health care team meeting as appropriate; review policies and procedures and attend in-service training. The incumbent will participate in research activities pertinent to clinical audiology. Although limited research is conducted in the clinical setting, the use of carefully executed audiologic procedures may be a part of a research design. The incumbent may be requested to assist in gathering clinical research data.
