Job Description: In your pivotal, rewarding role as Hearing & Speech Tech II, you will be the Audiologist provider extender with primary tasks assisting adult hearing aid audiologists in clinical and administrative duties. Technician should review hearing aid/hearing evaluation/student lab workers schedules with Associate Director for following day to determine how they can be best utilized. Duties of the Adult Audiology Technician are subject to change and I be prioritized based on the needs of the clinic. The position will require flexibility.
Clinical Duties
Hearing Aid Appointments
Complete hearing aid contracts for hearing aid fittings
Basic cleaning of hearing aids: a) Listening check, b) Run hearing aids through drying chamber, c) Replace earhooks, and d) Re-tube earmolds
Complete parts of the hearing aid orientation: a) Orient patients to the parts of the hearing aid, b) Review battery care and precautions, c) Orient parent on how to place/remove hearing aids, d) Review hearing aid contract with the patient and make a copy of document for patient, e) Review with family Vanderbilt hearing aid services like Same-Day clinic, and f) Escort family to APSS following the appointment to ensure payment is secured.
Same Day Clinic
Manage the Same Day Clinic schedule at least three days a week at our satellite clinics.
This will allow the current technician to move to Franklin full time and see patients at least three days a week.
This technician can also perform some of the same duties as the new technician during hearing aid fittings.
Administrative Duties
Hearing Aid Program
Amplification Consult Visits
Monitor amplification consult visits to verify that insurance benefits are in the system prior to the appointment.
Calculate patient balance if they have a partial insurance benefit.
Contact patients if they have an insurance benefit that cannot be used at VUMC.
Call insurer for benefit information if necessary.
Amplification Fitting Appointments
Verify that the hearing aids and earmolds have arrived for the appointment.
Complete hearing aid contracts for the fittings.
Follow Up Visits
Confirm ordered accessories are received.
Bone Anchored Implant Fittings
Verify that equipment has arrived in the clinic.
Verify that codes for fitting appointment have been submitted insurance verification. If they are not covered codes, contact patient to verify the amount due at the time of the fitting. Document in chart.
Complete contract paperwork for fitting.
Bone Anchored Implant Program
Assist audiologists with letters of medical necessity (LMNs) for BAI devices/services: a) Write LMNs, b) Submit LMNs to administrative assistants, c) Follow up to ensure that signed LMNs are returned from the administrative assistants, d) Work with audiologist to obtain all necessary paperwork for BAI orders, e) Submit documents to Cochlear, Med-El and Oticon Medical, f) Follow up within 2-weeks to verify that documents were received and are being processed, and g) Maintain records regarding status of all submitted LMNs until devices/equipment are fit.
Epic Message Basket
Monitor pool message basket in eStar and distribute messages to the appropriate person for completion.

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES: EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE - (NOVICE):- Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate the ability to maintain equipment, products, or systems in practical applications of moderate difficulty. Assures that parts inventory is sufficient.
REHAB PTA/COTA PATIENT DOCUMENTATION (INTERMEDIATE):- Demonstrates mastery proficiency in documentation practices. Documents in the appropriate templates and utilizes only approved abbreviations within patient documentation. Meets institutional standards for quality and timeliness of documentation. May orient new staff to departmental and VUMC documentation standards. Will complete accurate chart audits of co-workers' documentation.
AUDIOLOGY PATIENT EDUCATION (INTERMEDIATE):- Communicates functional impact of assessment findings, treatment interventions, diagnosis, and disease process. Adapts communication to the level of understanding of the patient. Determines comprehension and need for repetition and/or revision of counseling methods. Promotes public awareness and prevention of communicative and related disorders through local, and regional presentations to patient groups (e.g. American Tinnitus Association, Vestibular Disorders Association etc). Generates measurable improvement in understanding and quality of life of patients and their families.
