This position is located in the Audiology Section of the Operative Care Line at the Tomball Community Base Outpatient Center (CBOC). The Staff Audiologist performs the the full range of audiological activities for the care of outpatients presenting with the most difficult and complex hearing disorders, including those patients whose communicative abilities are compounded by emotional and/or extreme physical symptoms, on an independent basis. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. Master's degree or its equivalent in audiology or hearing science from an accredited college or university is required. "Accredited" means a college or university accredited by a regional accreditation organization and an audiology program recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education (ACAE) and/or the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). NOTE: Effective January 1, 2007, the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of ASHA accredits only doctoral degree programs in audiology or hearing science. Licensure. For GS-12 and above, the incumbent must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. English Language Proficiency. Audiologists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a. Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining grades. GS-12: Licensure. The incumbent must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Education and Experience. In addition to the requirements at the GS-11 level, completion of 1 year of professional experience comparable to the next lower level and possession of a full, current and unrestricted license to practice audiology. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs): a. Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies. b. Knowledge of clinical services, and the ability to perform them independently. c. Ability to conduct assessments and provide treatment interventions. d. Ability to provide consultation to other health care professionals. e. Knowledge of contemporary audiology practice. f. Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary audiology scope of practice. Physical Requirements: The duties of this position require periods of sitting, standing, walking, repeated bending (both legs required), light lifting / carrying (15-20 pounds) occasionally, the use of fingers (both hands required), and reaching above the shoulder area. Patient transport occasionally requires the pushing of wheelchairs. Rapid mental, muscular, and fine motor coordination simultaneously is required. Ability to distinguish basic colors, shades of colors and periods of long periods of reading from a monitor or computer screen (up to 8 hours). Ability to hear (hearing aid permitted). Provides patient and family education including informed consent. Participates in developing guidelines and protocols, new patient programs, and evaluation of existing programs. Maintains patient records and other data required by the clinic, service, and medical center. Maintains, supplies, equipment and clinical areas to optimize safety and efficiency. May be requested to service on service-level committees or task forces or to represent to service/section on medical center, network, or national committees. May perform ancillary assignments, including program management duties on an occasional basis, where the complexity and amount of work is not substantial. Follows applicable informed consent, HIPAA rules on privacy and protecting patient rights. Demonstrates professional knowledge of and skill in applying a wide range of theories, principles and methodologies in the practice of Audiology to young adult through geriatric population. Evaluates patients to determine nature, type, and severity of hearing disorders and tinnitus complaints using a full range of diagnostic tests and techniques, past and current medical history, record review, and in consultation with family and other health care practitioners Engages in the differential diagnosis of the full range of hearing problems. In diagnosing these problems, the incumbent conducts and interprets the complete range of specialized and refined audiologic test procedures currently available. Develops treatment plans and provides aural and vestibular rehabilitation. Assists in maintaining supplies and equipment inventory and calibration schedule of all specialized equipment to optimize clinic operational need and efficiency. Performs additional tasks specified by the Service Chief of Audiology and Speech Pathology which may include research, data gathering, quality improvement project, service expansion, participation in seminars, workshops, trainings, meeting, interdisciplinary, and other administrative duties as directed.
