Medical Assistant-Inflammatory Bowel Disorder (IBD)
Supports the licensed healthcare team in performing office examinations and procedures by organizing and managing clinic patient flow, gathering and documenting patient screening data, assist with patient and family education and communication with patient's health care team.
Our medical assistants focus on caring for the Inflammatory Bowel Disorder (IBD) patients both in person as well as telehealth visits. For in-person visits, the Medical Assistants (MA) will pull a patient from the main waiting area to their intake area/office; perform vitals, medication and allergy history, and intake questionnaire. The patient is then placed in a clean exam room. For telemedicine visits the MA will perform the intake questions and ask the patient to convey any vital signs that they are able to provide. This intake is performed up to two days prior to the visit. At the end of the day after patients are seen the MA will perform side tasks that include calling future telemedicine patients to perform intakes, inputting external labs, making new patient binders and calling new patients to update their charts to prepare for their upcoming visits, other tasks may be requested. Training for this role will likely be 4-6 weeks.

We are located at One Hundred Oaks located about 15 minutes from the VUMC downtown campus. Over 10,000 patient visits a year (30-80 per day) are completed in the clinic by the multidisciplinary team including physicians, mid-level providers, pharmacists, social worker, dieticians, and psychologists in addition to our nursing team that includes medical assistants, LPNs, and RNs. We are opened Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm and closed on VUMC's recognized holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4 th , Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day).

Assists with patient and family education.
Collects and documents patient screening data for the healthcare team.

CLINICAL COMPETENCIES (NOVICE): - Demonstrates sufficient fundamental proficiency to assist and perform clinical care including but not limited to vital signs, phlebotomy, specimen collection and point of care testing as directed by unit standards.
CLINICAL PATIENT DOCUMENTATION (FUNDAMENTAL AWARENESS): - Has limited experience or training working with clinical applications for patient documentation.
ENVIRONMENT OF CARE (NOVICE): - Demonstrates sufficient fundamental proficiency with set up and maintenance of patient exam room, supplies and equipment.
