A multi-talented, experienced engineer is required to support a wide range of imaging research activities including human and animal research imaging operations. The ideal candidate will possess knowledge across a broad range of electronics, instrumentation and imaging hardware, as well as skills in machine shop practices, and be able to multi-task independently to support a large group of research scientists and trainees.
A principal focus will be on first-line diagnosis, intervention, maintenance and development of high field MRI systems (Bruker, Aligent) and provision of technical support for MR research studies, including the development of advanced techniques requiring specific hardware or equipment modifications. Experience in the operation, diagnostic evaluation, and maintenance of MRI systems would be a advantage.
The VUIIS also operates and manages resources in other modalities (PET, CT, US, Optical) and for human studies. The individual will be responsible for the first-order maintenance, diagnosis, and operation of these equipments. The Engineer will also be responsible for overseeing 3rd party maintenance, fills, equipment repairs, and support.
Design and manufacture of accessories and special equipments required for imaging of human subjects and animals as defined by VUIIS faculty, staff and trainees. Construction may involve utilizing machine tools and/or 3D printing from a variety of materials.
Operations and supervision of dedicated, small machine shop for manufacturing equipment needed by VUIIS including training and supervision of VUIIS trainees.
Leadership, operation, and support of 3D printing facilities and activities including CAD type software for printing objects; management of 3D printing services requested by VUIIS members; purchasing and financial reporting of 3D printing operations.
Technical support for operations of Center of Small Animal Imaging and Center of Imaging including assistance as needed with equipment modifications, repairs, diagnostics or other general support.
General support of VUIIS activities including assistance with equipment installation, removal, maintenance and modifications as needed.
The individual should be comfortable with working with advanced electronic equipment. The primary need is to work independently to complete assignments and meet specific goals, to bring expertise in design and fabrication to complement the skills of others, and to operate as a team member supporting multiple activities.
***Desired qualifications - relevant degree in electronics or similar with at least 3 years of experience in performing maintenance, providing support, and operating independently to provide service on equipment. Skills in hands-on electronics, system trouble shooting, RF technology, device design, digital and analogue systems, machine shop design and manufacture, and facilities management would all be useful. ***
